School Shout Out: Former teacher left lasting impression
REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) —
Malachai Holewinski is a sixth grader at Baldwin Road Junior High in Reynoldsburg, a STEM school. Malachai said he loves the STEM schools since they focus on science, technology, engineering, & math. The School Shout Out nomination came from Malachai's mother. The nomination for recognition is for Malachai's teacher last year. Shannon Holewinski said that her son would come home every day in fifth grade talking about how awesome Ms. Birie was and how she inspired the students.
Ms. Elizabeth Birie is the fifth grade social studies and math teacher. She said she embraces the idea of keeping the kids moving and challenged. Both of her parents were teachers and they told Elizabeth to not go into education just because they taught. She also did not plan on getting into the STEM program, but has embraced it. She said the STEM program makes the kids great problem solvers and that the kids are very advanced with computer coding and other topics.
Ms. Birie said that she was very humbled by Malachai's kind words. Malachai said that he passes her room on his way to band practice and occasionally gives her a hug when he sees Ms. Birie.
