SOUTH COLUMBUS (Ben Garbarek) – A new coffee shop is looking to rebuild its neighborhood one cup at a time.
Community Grounds is set to open on Parsons Avenue in a former library building. Its founder said there will be more than coffee on the menu. The shop will offer CPR classes, first aid classes and other things for the community for free.
“It’s going to be a community effort,” said Founder Joel Cosme Jr. “It’s going to be a place where people are coming here as a community, sharing ideas, sharing responsibility for the place. There are going to be a lot of people working together making it happen.”
There isn’t much on the block for the neighbors currently. Many of the nearby buildings are empty, but some hope the coffee shop is a sign of things to come. The new Parsons Avenue library is also being built across the street.
“The area is changing,” he said. “Change will come and it’s going to be great.”
Cosme is launching a Kickstarter campaign September 10th to raise the rest of the money needed to get it started. He has plans for meeting space inside for local groups and spots where local musicians can perform.
“This is just going to be a wonderful place for everyone to get together and experience what the South Side really is,” Cosme said.
Cosme said he hopes to open the doors are Community Grounds next spring.
