Ingredients
One-Egg Butter Cake basic recipe
2 cups sifted cake four
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
2-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup shortening

Cream Filling
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups scalded milk
5 tablespoons flour
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions
One-Egg Butter Cake basic recipe
Sift together flour, salt, and baking powder. Cream shortening until soft and smooth, and gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk. Turn into greased pan and bake. In single square pan - moderate oven (350 degrees) 50 minutes.

Cream Filling
Combine dry ingredients. Slowly stir in milk. Cook in double boiler over boiling water for 15 minutes, or until thick. Add a little of the hot mixture to eggs. Stir in remaining hot mixture. Cook over simmering water for 3 minutes. Cool and add vanilla.
