Fiona up to 150 pounds, but has mixed results when introduced to her parents
CINCINNATI, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- While Fiona continues to grow, her integrations into the hippo community has hit some snags.
The 10-week-old hippo is up to 150 pounds, drinking 64 oz of formula five times a day.
That improvement has come along with more exposure to her parents, Bibi and Henry.
Zoo officials said in Fiona's blog, that her introductions have gotten mixed results, both from the hippo calf and her mother.
The two are connected through "howdies," which are two sets of protective barriers with a roughly a one-foot gap in between.
There are time when either can look each other in curiosity for a while, there are times when there's disinterest, and there's also fear. The anxiety is two-fold, Bibi is concerned that Fiona is too close to her food, while Fiona gets scared of her mother's reactions.
Zoo staff acknowledged it would take time for Fiona and her parents to adjust, but this makes them believe it will take that much longer.
