Community set to honor teens killed in summer crash
POWELL, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) —
Parents, teachers, students and friends of two local students killed in a car crash this summer will be honored tonight at a high school football game with a unique memorial. Fans will blow bubbles at the beginning of the Olentangy Liberty High School football game in honor of Hunter McClelland and Gavin Schlotterbeck. The teens died in a two-car crash on Africa Road in July.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol calls the crash a horrible accident. They can find no reason why Scholtterbeck went off the right side of the road, over-corrected to the left, swerving right in the path of another car. The Patrol said cell phones were not in use and both cars were travelling below the speed limit. Results of blood tests are not back yet, but investigators say there is no reason to believe drugs or alcohol are involved.
A friend of Hunter's, Allissa Thornton, is starting her senior year at Liberty and still can't believe her two friends are not.
"It's hard knowing I have all of those memories and she's not here anymore," Thornton said.
Thornton said there are plans for a permanent memorial, possibly a bench or tree on campus, and a scholarship fund.
