Gahanna man dies after skiing accident in Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- A Gahanna man has died after striking a pole at Snow Trails Ski Resort in Mansfield late Friday morning.

Witnesses told a Richland County Sheriff's deputy that 59-year-old John P. Carney was skiing down a hill at a high rate of speed, but in control when he tried to avoid a collision with a young girl and man in his path around 11:50 a.m. Carney subsequently then struck a pole at 25 miles per hour, according to a witness statement.

Another witness notified ski patrol, who arrived within a minute. They immediately began CPR and retrieved an AED to revive him.

He was taken to OhioHealth in Mansfield where he later died from his injuries.

The cause of death remains unknown with an autopsy scheduled.

The Richland County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.
