Jon Husted begins statewide gubernatorial campaign tour Monday
Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted starts a statewide tour Monday morning as he begins his campaign to be Ohio's next governor.
The four-day tour includes 10 stops, beginning with at 10:30 am kickoff event at the University of Dayton, Husted's alma mater. Other locations include Newark, Chillicothe, Washington Court House, Circleville, and Cleveland.
Husted (R-Montpelier) served in the Ohio House of Representatives before becoming Secretary of State. He was elected Speaker of the House twice.
He officially announced his gubernatorial candidacy this past weekend, and he's positioning himself as a pro-gun, pro-family values conservative.
The Republican says his family "would firmly fit in Hillary Clinton's `basket of deplorables."' Clinton used the reference in her presidential campaign against Donald Trump, whom Husted voted for.
Husted and U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci are the only Republicans currently in the field. Lt. Governor Mary Taylor has created a campaign website, and Attorney General Mike DeWine also is expected to officially join the Republican field.
On the Democratic side, former U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, former state Rep. Connie Pillich and state Senator Joe Schiavioni have all entered the race as well.
The primary will be held May 8th next year and Ohio's next governor will be elected November 6th of next year. Governor John Kasich cannot run again because of term limits.
