JULINGTON CREEK, Fla. (WSYX/WTTE) -- A Florida elementary school student was forced to leave school after he showed up for picture day with blue hair.

According to News4Jax, eight-year-old Luca Sinno didn't get his photo taken because he was in violation of school policy St. Johns County School District -- approximately 30 miles south of Jacksonville.

"He got to school and I got a call from the principal's office that he was in the principal's office and that I needed to come get him from school, his mother, Dana Sinno, told News4Jax.

Despite wearing a suit for the occasion, the principal cited a rule in the district handbook which states, “Hair shall be clean and well combed or brushed. Extreme hairstyles will not be acceptable.”

Dana Sinno said that rule is muddled by a individual's interpretation.

"What's extreme to her is not extreme to me, or else we wouldn't have done it," she said.

A school district spokesperson told News4Jax the principal was well within her right, pointing to the note in the rule book showing it's at the principal's discretion what should be determined inappropriate or disruptive.

Sinno said her main issue wasn't about the hair, but that missed school and wouldn't be allowed back until it was "normal," which they later colored back to his natural brown color.
