Fire Destroys Licking Valley Field House

NEWARK -- The Hanover Township Fire Department is investigating a fire that destroyed a field house at Licking Valley Middle School late Friday night.
According to Hanover Twp Fire Chief Brian Spellman, the fire was called in by some juveniles around 11:00 pm on March 15, 2013. The callers are believed to be either students or former students of the middle school. The callers reported seeing smoke from the roof of the building.
The chief responded and saw heavy smoke in the building and called for more equipment.
Once crews were on scene, they attempted to vent the building which, according to Spellman, made the fire more intense.
Flames and smoke began shooting through the roof, at which time all firefighters were told to evacuate the building. Not long after, that roof collapsed.
Approximately nine area fire departments responded to the scene due to the lack of water supply. Water was needed to be trucked in from miles away.
The fire remains under investigation and no cause has been determined at this time. No injuries were reported.
