COLUMBUS (Andrew Michael/Ken Hines) -- COTA is stepping into the future by rolling out new buses designed to cut down on fuel costs and emissions.
Thirty new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses hit central Ohio streets on Monday.
While CNG buses are quieter and more eco-friendly than standard diesel models, the most notable difference will be highlighted in COTA's yearly fuel costs, which average $31,000 per diesel vehicle. CNG models' fuel costs are expected to average only $10,000 each year.
COTA officials plan to incrementally replace their entire fleet with CNG buses over the next 12 years, as each diesel model reaches the end of its service life.
