OSU Targeted in Online Threat

Updated: Wednesday, April 3 2013, 07:49 PM EDT
COLUMBUS – (OSU Release) The Ohio State University Police Division (OSU PD) issued a public safety notice this morning informing the campus community of a potential security threat.
“We have moved past the window of concern; however, we will maintain the increased presence and heightened awareness for as long as necessary to ensure the safety of the campus community,” said Ohio State University Police Chief Paul Denton.

OSU PD had been investigating postings to fantasy, role player game sites which referenced a potential shooting “at OSU.” From the initial information, OSU PD was unable to determine if “OSU” was in reference to The Ohio State University and they immediately initiated an investigation.

Just before midnight, April 3, OSU PD received additional information from a chat room moderator about “a cafeteria” at The Ohio State University. Police officers worked through the night to assess the information and the credibility of the threat and engaged local, state and federal law enforcement, including the Columbus Division of Police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Ohio Homeland Security Fusion Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“We felt it was important to notify the university community of the potential threat in order both to raise awareness and to remind everyone to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the appropriate authorities. We again take this opportunity to remind everyone: If you see something, say something — dial 9-1-1 in an emergency or 292-2121 to reach the OSU Police Division’s non-emergency line,” Denton said.

The matter will not be considered complete until OSU PD has identified the individual or individuals responsible for this incident. No additional information is expected today. Any updates will be shared as they become available.
