Gene Smith's grooming of future AD's has Diana Sabau on the fast track
COLUMBUS -- Ohio State Vice-President and Director of Athletics Gene Smith has placed more than a few of his colleagues in the AD seat around the country.
OSU Executive Associate Athletic Director Diana Sabau has been going through Smith's process of readying for such a challenge as a Power 5 Athletic Director.
"It's been exhilarating every day getting up to speed," Sabau told ABC-6. She has been immersed in every aspect of the Buckeye football program for the last several months to prepare for the task.
Sabau has negotiated scheduling deals, contracts and worked beside head coach Urban Meyer and his Director of Football Sports Performance Mickey Marotti. Sabau will attend the Big 10 Meetings in February with Smith and sit down for mock interviews to prepare for her own journey.
What gratification does Smith get from grooming his co-workers ? "To see them sit in the seat."
Smith has sent former OSU colleagues Pat Chun to Florida Atlantic University and soon to be Washington State, Martin Jarmond to Boston College and Heather Lyke to Eastern Michigan and now Pittsburgh.
