The Football Fever: Recruit pranks Meyer, head coach responds
COLUMBUS -- A good-natured prank emerged on the recruiting trail for the Buckeyes. New enrollee Baron Browning was behind it.
The linebacker from Texas initially notified Buckeye head coach Urban Meyer that he would sign with Alabama.
Meyer said he tossed his phone against the wall when he got the news. That was the desired effect Browning told reporters Wednesday. Later, Browning's father called Meyer to let him know Baron was just kidding.
Meyer is not one to be one upped. He called Browning back a few days later to tell the young player that he was taking an NFL coaching job. Browning went silent. Meyer said Browning teared up. The coach had scored a solid comeback.
"I guesss I deserved," said Browning. Said Meyer, "You guys are going to enjoy covering him the next few years."
