Santa-Style Burglar Costs Family Business $20,000

COLUMBUS (Lisa Rantala/Kate Liebers) -- The man squeezing through a restaurant's exhaust chute early Monday morning was no Santa Claus.

Instead of presents, the intruder delivered a mess that cost Burnzie's Old Trail more than $20,000.

Owner John Burns said the burglar broke cabling that activated the suppression system and sprayed chemicals all over the kitchen.

That was before he got stuck in the chute for about 20 minutes, according to the surveillance video. The suspect, dripping with grease, eventually freed himself and fled.

Deputies said they found the suspect -- James Kirk, who was a cook at Burnzie's -- at the hospital with cuts all over his arms.

The Burnzie's kitchen is expected to be closed until Friday or until the cleaning, repairs and inspections are complete.

The bar, however, is open for business.

Kirk faced a judge Wednesday for felony vandalism. Deputies said he would most likely face additional charges.
