Owner of Chubby Pet Looking for Help

WEST COLUMBUS (Terri Sullivan/Kate Liebers) -- The weight loss success of one portly pet has become an expensive problem, and the dog's owner is looking for help.

Dennis the dachshund had grown fat from a diet of human food by the time Brooklyn Burton adopted the pooch from her great uncle.

"My great uncle was tiny -- six feet, 125 pounds," Burton said. "He just took a couple of bites and gave everything to him."

After five months with his new owner, Dennis went from 56 to 29 pounds. However, with 13 more pounds to go, another problem has surfaced.

Dennis has lost so much weight, that the excess skin is hanging off of his short body.

"It just drags on the floor," Burton said. "He's not able to move that well, and he steps on his skin a lot which hurts a lot."

What hurts Brooklyn, a college student on a budget, is the cost of the skin removal surgery.

Dennis will be evaluated at the Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital next week for the surgery.

Her great uncle was going to help pay, but he passed away last Monday.

"My hope for Dennis is that he's able to live a normal life," Burton said.

In an effort to raise funds and support, Burton has set up a Facebook page called "Dennis in Ohio."
