Student in Good Spirits After Kidney Transplant From Teacher

MANSFIELD (Dominique Mondon) -- An 8-year-old girl is recovering well after her former kindergarten teacher donated a kidney in order to save the child’s life.

Born with just one failing kidney, Nicole Miller found a donor right in the classroom. Eighteen potential donors were tested before Nicole’s kindergarten teacher Wendy Killian was found to be a match.

Although Nicole’s parents were optimistic, they did have some concerns when she and Wendy underwent kidney transplant surgery in April. Nicole’s father Brian Miller says, “…the kidney could be rejected, that all Wendy was doing for Nicole would be for naught, I mean, there’s a million things that could go wrong.”

But, Nicole’s parents say they knew the kidney was working when she leapt out of bed just three days after the operation.

For Wendy, recovery proved to be a little tougher. Though she suffered from four weeks of nausea, headaches, and difficulty breathing, Wendy says seeing Nicole now makes it all worth it.
