Columbus Man Accused of Beating Grandmother Attacked in Jail
COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- A man charged with assaulting his grandmother was attacked by inmates in jail on Wednesday night after news broke of the elderly woman's death.
John Spindler was hospitalized after detention officers found him injured in his cell early Thursday morning. Investigators believe the 41-year-old was beaten by fellow inmates, but do not expect to file charges due to Spindler's unwillingness to identify his attackers.
Spindler faces multiple felony charges after allegedly beating his mother on June 13, then knocking his grandmother, Annarea McCray, to the ground when she attempted to pull him off her daughter, breaking the McCray's arm and hip.
McCray, 90, died Wednesday night at a Columbus nursing home after developing pneumonia in the days following the assault.
Before her death, McCray said she recently decided to kick Spindler -- who had lived with his grandmother for 25 years -- and another grandson out of her house in an effort to initiate a change in their behavior.
"I thought that might work, if I keep saying that to them, and they'd straighten up," McCray said. "They never did. No, they never did. I never thought that they would turn on me like that."
Spindler was indicted Wednesday on counts of felonious assault and domestic violence. He currently faces up to 20 years in prison, though it is not yet known if his grandmother's death could lead to upgraded charges.
