Powell's "Race for Ellie" to Raise Funds to Fight Rare Genetic Disease

POWELL (Ashley Yore/Ken Hines) -- Researchers at OSU's Wexner Medical Center are asking for the public's help to fund their effort to cure a life-threatening genetic disease.

OSU Researchers currently battling Mitochondrial Disease are among those encouraging participation in the Race for Ellie, which will be held on Saturday, June 22 at Olentangy Liberty High School in Powell.

The event is held in honor of 11-year-old Ellie Kovalcik, who was diagnosed with the disease 9 years ago, and is now unable to eat, breathe, walk, or talk without assistance.

Ellie's parents said the research being conducted at OSU could enable doctors to repair the genetic codes of Mitochondrial Disease patients, including their daughter, who has already outlived doctors' expectations.
