Franklin Co. Coroner Trying to Locate Loved Ones of the Deceased

COLUMBUS (Carol Luper/Ken Hines) -- The Franklin County Coroner said she is using every tool at her disposal to find the families or friends of people who died with no known next of kin.

Coroner Jan Gorniak publicly posted the names of six people in obituaries in mid-June to try to establish contact with anyone who knew the deceased.

County investigators also help in the process by searching the deceased people's homes for address books, greeting cards, and other information that may provide clues.

After the names appeared in the newspaper, Gorniak said she received information about three of the deceased that, she hopes, will lead to the identification of next of kin.

If no one comes forward, the coroner will work with a lawyer to make arrangements for burial or cremation.
