Woman Warns About Online Dating Scam
COLUMBUS (Tara Morgan) -- A woman wants to warn others about online dating scams after she says she was conned out of thousands of dollars.
The central Ohio school teacher did not want ABC6/FOX28 to use her real name or show her face because she says she's embarrassed.
But says she went to a private investigator to get her money back after she met a conman through a Christian-based dating web site.
"He started asking for some money to be wired to him for unexpected expenses," said the woman.
Private investigator Mike Powers says the woman's story isn't unique that he's seen at least three cases in the past six weeks where con artists have swindled millions.
"You don't know who you're dealing with," said Powers about online dating.
Powers says the crooks play on women's feelings to get money for fake investments.
The woman he's helping recommends others to stick to traditional dating.
"Stay away from internet dating sites," said the woman.
Powers says he plans to get the authorities involved once he identifies the man so he can spend time in prison.
