Westside Neighbors Concerned About Alleged Animal Abuse
WEST COLUMBUS (Jen French)—Westside apartment tenants say a children’s game got out of hand when they found a kitten nearly tortured to death. They want the behavior in their neighborhood to stop.
Saturday afternoon, residents at Wedgewood Village Apartments said they witnessed at least a dozen children between the ages of 4 and 13 stomp on a kitten. They said some kids were wielding sticks and poked the animal, then used a squirt gun filled with milk to try to drown it.
One woman, who did not want to be identified on camera for safety reasons, told ABC 6/FOX 28 that she was so horrified by the incident she called police.
"The cat was on the ground in front of the window trying to get away from them,” she said.
It’s not the first time tenants on Wedgewood Drive have seen kids targeting animals. Leslie Chambers walks her 4-year-old dog Pepper frequently. She said her pet is often taunted.
"They'll run at him and start barking at him and making him jump,” Chambers said.
According to a Columbus Police report, the kitten was taken to OSU Veterinary Medical Center. Its injuries were so severe that it was euthanized.
No arrests were made. All of the suspects are juveniles. Witnesses said an officer attempted to contact the children’s parents.
