Fire Burns West Columbus Industrial Building

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- Fire crews were forced to battle a blaze at a West Side building from the outside on Tuesday, due to the danger of roof collapse.

The fire started at approximately 3:30 p.m. at a welding and metal shop inside an industrial building at 5290 Krieger Ct., then quickly spread to other businesses.

Fire fighters began extinguishing the flames, but were forced to exit the building when a wall separated from the building's roof.

A city engineer was called in to confirm the roof's safety before fire fighters were allowed to re-enter the building.

The building houses multiple businesses that were operating when the fire started. All employees made it out safely, but many experienced tense moments before exiting the building.

"We saw smoke in the building [and] started to smell fire, something burning," Gotta Flip Gymnastics's Brittany Maynard said. "No sooner than we smelled that, some woman came running into the building, yelling the building was on fire and everybody get out."

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, but the flames and smoke are believed to have damaged businesses housed inside the building.

Fire crews were expected to remain at the site of the blaze into Tuesday night.
