Columbus Man Charged with Murdering His Grandmother
COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- A man accused of throwing his grandmother to the ground during an attack was indicted Wednesday for the elderly woman's murder.
John Spindler faces charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter, and felonious assault following the June 19 death of his grandmother, 90-year-old Annarea McCary.
Spindler threw his grandmother to the ground when she tried to pull him off her daughter -- Spindler's mother -- as he viciously attacked her on June 13 inside McCray's Columbus home, according to police.
McCray suffered a broken arm and hip as a result of the assault. She died after developing pneumonia during her recovery from her injuries.
Spindler's mother, 60-year-old Pam Haskins, suffered multiple facial fractures during the attack.
Spindler, 41, faces a possible sentence of 15 years to life in prison for his grandmother's murder, though the punishment could become more severe if he is also convicted of assaulting his mother.
Spindler was attacked in prison after the news of his grandmother's death was reported. He declined to cooperate with an investigation into the assault.
