Trooper Relives Rescue Attempt

CHILLICOTHE (Maria Durant) --  It's been about a week since last Monday night's double fatal accident in Pike county.

But trooper Thomas Cassity remembers the night vividly.

The Ohio Highway Patrol trooper was the first on the scene of the head on collision  that happened on River Road near Meadow Run Road.

"I knew the roads because I'm from that area," Cassity said,  "As i was approaching, I saw smoke coming from the vehicle and then I actually saw the car on fire."

Without hesitation the trooper raced to the car.  He jumped in trying to get the two women trapped inside out, but they were pinned in.

"While I was in the vehicle I kept taking in a lot of smoke, so I had to jump in and out of the vehicle to catch my breath.  I was coughing and gagging."

Cassity tried to get them out of the car - -  but he couldn't do it by himself.

When the fire department arrived, crews hooked the car and pulled the car away from the guardrail.  They busted the windows and took the door off.

Unfortunately, the two women didn't survive their injuries.  And the driver of the car was pregnant.

The person police believe is responsible for the accident took off from the scene and law enforcement is looking for him.

"We actually could use the public's help," Cassity says.  "If you have any tips call us at #677."

Police are looking for Paul Riggs, Jr.  He's wanted on three counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and one count of aggravated vehicular assault.
