Suspect Robs Elderly Man at East Columbus Gas Station
COLUMBUS (Lisa Rantala/Ken Hines) -- Police are trying to identify a pickpocket who robbed an elderly East Side man in broad daylight in front of a series of surveillance cameras.
The suspect saw 85-year-old Chester Sharp buy lottery tickets with cash from his money clip at Sunoco on Main St. and Hamilton Road on July 23, according to police.
Surveillance footage from the station shows the suspect cover a portion of his head with his shirt, steal Sharpe's money clip, then flee the scene with $80 in cash.
The unarmed Sharpe said he threatened to shoot the suspect, but was not able to convince the man to return his money.
"Stop, stop or I'll shoot," the ex-marine recalled yelling at the time of the robbery. "It was a dumb remark."
Sharp feels his age made him a desirable target for the suspect.
"There are sometimes I'm feeble as I walk around," he said. "I get leg cramps and back aches."
Investigators believe the thief lives near the station, and, like Sharpe, was a regular customer at the Sunoco station.
