Victim Recovering After Being Shot in Face at Madison Co. Gas Station
MADISON COUNTY (Carol Luper/Ken Hines) -- A man who was shot in the jaw while being carjacked is recovering at a Columbus hospital while authorities work to charge two teens with the crimes.
William "Joe" Rudd was shot at a Madison County TravelAmerica station on July 27. Police found teenage murder suspects Devonere Simmonds and Nathaniel Brunner sleeping inside Rudd's car in Dayton hours after the shooting.
Rudd was returning to his Virginia home when he was shot. He remains in the intensive care unit at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.
"People are really upset because everybody knew Joe," Rudd's boss, Floyd Hovin, said. "We liked him a lot. He's done a lot of things for people. He's a caring person.
Investigators believe Simmonds, 17, and Brunner, 18, shot Rudd while fleeing from Columbus police, who were searching for the suspects in connection with at least four shootings, three of which were fatal.
Simmonds and Brunner are currently behind bars in Columbus.
