Barber Shop Owner Shoots Robbery Suspect in Linden Area

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines/Ben Garbarek) -- A barber won't face any charges after shooting a would-be robber.

Investigators decided the shooting at the Linden barber shop Tuesday afternoon was an act of self-defense.

Calvin Brown said a man demanded his money and went to reach for a gun in his waistband.  Brown said he then hit the guy and shot him.

The robbery suspect collapsed at a bank across the street from the shop. He was transported to Riverside Methodist Hospital in stable condition.

Brown has been running Mr. Brown's Barber Shop on Cleveland Ave. for three decades.  He refused to leave after being robbed last year.

"The neighborhood is quite rough," Brown said.  "It's tough out there, (but) I grew up in this community and I love it and I'm always trying to give back and help the people here."

He said he bought his gun after the robbery last year.  He wants others to not repeat Tuesday's wannabe robber's mistake.

"Leave these senior citizens alone," he said.  "We ain't playing.  I'm serious.  If they come knocking on my door, I got something for them."
