Apartment Burns in East Columbus

COLUMBUS (Kellie Hanna) Arson investigators are on the scene of an apartment fire at 1294 Berwick Arms Place.

It started in a 2nd floor bedroom at the Colonial Village apartment complex near E. Livingston Ave. and Rand Ave. in East Columbus.

Crews say they got the fire under control just before 7 a.m. about 15 minutes after it started.

There is extensive fire damage to that apartment as well as smoke damage to the adjacent apartment.

The resident of that adjacent unit says someone knocked on her door to get her out safely and says she's lucky to be alive.  She says there was so much heavy smoke, she couldn't breath coming down the stairs.

There's no word on how the fire started, but arson investigators are there to make sure there wasn't anything suspicious related to this fire.

Right now, they say there is no reason to think this fire is arson and will likely be ruled accidental.

The American Red Cross has been called in to help with the displaced residents.
