Friend: Hilliard Man Arrested in Egypt

COLUMBUS (Ben Garbarek/Ken Hines) -- A Hilliard native and Ohio State University graduate is locked up in an Egyptian prison for taking part in protests after the military takeover of that nation's government.

Mohammed Soltan was arrested after being interviewed by ABC News Martha Raddatz, as well as a reporter from Al Jazzera, according to Soltan's childhood friend, Kareem El-Hosseiny.

Things there are so unpredictable, and people are getting arrested left and right, so we were worried about him getting arrested from the get-go, El-Hosseiny said.

In addition to his arrest, Soltan is suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm sustained during the interview with Al Jazzera, according to El-Hosseiny.

He said getting shot felt like the Hulk punching him in the arm."

El-Hosseiny spent time with Soltan in Egypt earlier this summer, and said neither he nor his friend are strong supporters of Mohammed Morsi, but they both oppose the military's removal of the democratically elected leader.

I would switch spots with him, El-Hosseiny said of his friend. [Democracy] is something were very passionate about. We really have a way to change the country and the way it is, and its an opportunity we dont want to give up.

Soltan is charged with association with a banned organization and spreading false news, according to El-Hosseiny.

Soltan has lived in Egypt since January.
