Buckeye Crowds Bring Big Business to Local Stores
COLUMBUS (James Jackson) -- We're just one day away from Ohio State's first football game of the season. While fans anxiously wait for kickoff, bleeding scarlet and gray, the countdown has local businesses seeing green.
The first thing you see when you walk in the doors of Eddie George's Grill 27 is Buckeye football on the television. Fans are decked out in scarlet and gray, enjoying food inside. Jack Taylor is from Cambridge, Ohio and he's a big Bucks fan. "We thought this would be appropriate to come in here since the buckeyes kick off a successful season next day, on Saturday," Taylor said.
Managers at the restaurant are hoping for a successful turnout on game day. It's all hands on deck and employees are ready to put in long hours. They expect a couple thousand people there tomorrow. That's five times the business they're used to on a regular Saturday. Adam Bianco is the restaurant's director of entertainment. "You get a pre game push. You have people that come in during the game and after and even late night. So there's a lot of people that pass through these doors," Bianco said.
David Jackson, the owner of the Across the Field Store, a Buckeye apparel spot, also hopes for a big turnout. He says fans are excited about last year's undefeated season and he's already seen business double. "It actually started about two weeks ago when the students moved in. So the students and the parents were all excited and now that game week is here, we're really excited about it," Jackson said.
So if you're planning to check out the game at a restaurant like Eddie George's Grill 27, managers suggest you get there about an hour before game time. Buckeye fever will have the place packed wall to wall.
