Developers to Build Memorial, Zoo Extension in Franklinton Area

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- Developers plan to free up dozens of acres of land near the Scioto River in order to bring more life to the Franklinton area.

Officials with the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation will narrow the waterway in front of COSI to make 33 acres of green space available for new projects, including a veteran's memorial and an extension of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

The corporation's administrators believe the success of previous development along the riverfront emphasizes the promise of the upcoming Franklinton project.

"The construction of the Scioto Mile and the Columbus Commons has been a catalyst for the redevelopment of an entire neighborhood called River South," Guy Worley said.

The project will be funded by public and private money, and includes a plan to build 1200 housing units in East Franklinton.
