Ga. Woman Indicted for 1977 Columbus Murder
COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- The Franklin County Grand Jury has indicted a Georgia woman suspected in a decades-old central Ohio murder case.
Zina Somone Roberson is being held in Georgia while Ohio officials attempt to extradite her to Columbus to face a charge of aggravated murder for the June 26, 1977 beating death of Anna Mae Florence.
Roberson was arrested by Rome, Ga. police on August 15 after Columbus investigators used DNA evidence to link her to Florence's murder.
"DNA technology has advanced substantially over the past several decades, which increases our chances of solving cases like this where evidence has been preserved," Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien said.
Florence, 77, was beaten to death with a telephone ago inside her Delavan Dr. home in 1987. Investigators do not believe Roberson knew the victim before the murder, which is believed to have occurred during a robbery.
Columbus police will have to obtain a governor's warrant to begin the process of returning Roberson to Ohio to face trial due to her refusal of extradition to the state.
If convicted, Roberson faces 30 years to life in prison, according to O'Brien.
