The Ohio State Marching Band: Marching to New Technology

THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY (Maria Durant) -- The best damn band in the land gets new technology to help band members learn their routines.

It's a pilot program that uses Ipads.  The project is the brainchild of two students -- Charlie King and Ryan Barta.

The two students say they were frustrated seeing how much paper was wasted by the band.  " It's close to 24-thousand dollars in paper that the band uses each year, " Barta says.

Now the band can see their sheet music on the Ipads and much more.

Through a program the students helped create, band members can use the Ipads to actually see their routines.  The program plots out how each band member will move during the drill.

"By using the program I can always know where I'm supposed to be," King says.  "Before we were guessing."

Through a grant the band received 50 Ipads.  And the hope is to have more for next year.

Jon Waters, OSU's Marching Band Director, loves the program.

" The best part is that it was developed by two students, " he says. " I think this will change how the OSU Marching Band operates and performs."
