Officer Shoots Dog, After Being Bitten
COLUMBUS (James Jackson) -- A child and a police officer are recovering, after they were both bitten by a dog. It happened in the back yard of a home, on Trindel Way, in Columbus, around 5 Sunday night.
Columbus Police say they got a call saying a dog bit a child. When police got there to help, they say the dog bit the officer and he shot it.
Scott Jemson lives across the street from where the dog attacked. He says the neighborhood is dog-friendly and you'll see a lot of them on the streets. "I know a lot of our neighbors have gotten dogs in the last few years and there's been some break ins in the neighborhood and people just want to feel safe," Jemson said.
Police interviewed neighbors to try to find out more about what happened. They urge people to keep a close eye on their dogs. Lieutenant Rod Whitich was on the scene of the attack. "The important thing is that owners of dogs make sure that their dogs are confined behind a sturdy fence for the safety of others." Whitich said.
Police say the officer was treated for minor injuries at the home and the child is expected to be okay. Their names have not been released. The dog was taken to the Franklin County Dog Shelter to be treated for it's injuries.
ABC 6 tried to talk to the dog's owner, but she did not want to comment.
Police will not give any other information at this time.
