Parking Headaches Getting Worse in Short North
COLUMBUS (Ben Garbarek) -- Parking is one of the biggest complaints for people headed to the Short North. Those headaches could be getting worse with the closing of a big public parking lot.
Construction is about to start on a new hotel on High Street in between Russell Street and Poplar Avenue. The lot will close Monday at 5 AM. That means roughly 40 public parking spots will be gone.
"I hate parking down here," said Tessa Dufresne of Reynoldsburg. "We passed the sign that says the lot will be closed forever. We're like forever? Short North parking is just frustrating in general so losing this spot is going to be even more frustrating."
It could also be frustrating for businesses in the area that need parking for its customers.
"There's a lot of us that rely on that parking," said Jason Lewis of Bernard's Tavern. "We're going to have to find other means to park."
Lewis said half of his customers drive in from outside the neighborhood. He's hoping he'll get more business with a hotel directly next door, but in the meantime it'll be a pain.
"It's just going to make things worse," he said. "But I'm sure people will find a way."
Help could be on the way though. A parking garage is set to open shortly a few blocks away. Lewis said there's also another parking garage in the works across the street from the planned hotel.
