Woman Dies After Striking Car, Tree in Marion

MARION (Jen French/Ken Hines) -- A driver died in a fiery crash Friday afternoon, despite the efforts of a good samaritan who tried to save the woman's life, according to state troopers.

The driver died at a central Ohio hospital after rear-ending a pickup truck on W. Fairground St., then speeding through the intersection at State Route 309 before crashing into a tree in a front yard.

The vehicle caught fire after slamming into the tree.

A neighbor who witnessed the crash risked his safety to pull the driver out of the burning car and administer CPR while waiting for medics to arrive, but was unable to save the woman's life.

"Some people are willing to do stuff like that. It's admirable that he tried," Sgt. Brandon Spalding said. "It's dangerous, but he did the best he could."

The owners of the property on which the driver struck the tree were not at home when the accident occurred.

Investigators have not released the identity of the woman killed in the crash.
