Powell Mailman Walks Again After 2012 Accident
POWELL (Carol Luper/Ken Hines) -- After 16 surgeries and several months of physical therapy, a central Ohio mailman seriously injured in an accident is once again walking.
Doug Poole's legs were crushed in January, 2012 when a car struck him as he stood behind his mail truck.
Poole was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition after the crash, at which time doctors told his wife he would likely lose his right leg.
Instead, Poole spent five months in the hospital, undergoing several surgeries to save his leg.
Poole returned home to find that members of his community had contributed time, materials, and labor to add a new first floor master bedroom and bathroom to his house, in order to spare him the difficulty of climbing steps.
Poole is now able to walk under his own power after months of intense physical therapy.
I dont feel unfortunate for what happened to me. I feel fortunate that I lived," Poole said. "I kept my leg, Im walking, Im with my family -- Im home.
Poole, along with his wife and three children, have thanked family, friends, and strangers for their assistance since the accident -- including employees from Trinity Homes, Carney Ranher Architects, and Benchmark Roofing.
