Newark Police Suspect Man of Driving Drunk with Kids in Car
NEWARK (Ken Hines) -- Police believe a man with a long history of drunk driving was at it again -- this time with his three young children inside the vehicle.
Newark police arrested Steven Cole on State Route 16 on Sunday afternoon after receiving multiple 911 calls from motorists reporting Cole's alleged erratic driving.
"He is going to hit somebody," a caller told a 911 dispatcher. "He is driving like an idiot. He about ran into five people."
Officers eventually stopped Cole's minivan, at which time they discovered the presence of his three sons (ages 11, 9, and 6), who cried and told police they had witnessed their father drink alcohol.
Cole was given a field sobriety examination during the traffic stop, but refused to submit to breathalyzer and urine tests.
Cole, a Worthington resident, has been convicted of drunk driving on three occasions, and was forced to use an ignition interlock device to start his car until July 15, 2013.
Cole has been charged with child endangering, as well as seat belt, speed, and lane violations in connection with Sunday's incident. Investigators believe he had been drinking before the arrest, but he is not currently charged with any alcohol-related crimes.
