Candlelight Vigil Held For Two Men Found in Burning Car

COLUMBUS (James Jackson) -- Family and friends grieve the loss of two men, who investigators say we're beaten and put in a burning car. A candlelight vigil was held in their honor Sunday, at the site where their bodies were discovered.

Sofia Avilez places a candle down for her baby brother, Jose. She fights back tears, trying to make sense of his death. "He was well loved and I can't see how somebody could do something so bad to him. I just love him," Avilez said.

Dozens of people showed their love and support to Jose Avilez and Richard Gill, at the Forest Creek Apartments, in Columbus. Posters, pictures and candles marked the area, where their bodies were found, Friday morning. "He was always there for me. In fact, I talked to him the night before he got killed. We were close. We're 9 months apart," Avilez said.

Matthew Mathes says he saw the burning car and rushed to help. But, it was too hot to get to the men. He told their families he's sorry. "It hurts me because I might not know them but I knew that they was screaming for me to help them and I couldn't do it," Mathes said.

Although Mathes tells ABC 6 he heard voices coming from the vehicle, the Franklin County coroner says both died from being hit in the head and it appears they passed away before they were put in the car. Tonight, family and friends want to know who's behind the crime. "I was shocked to see something like this happen," Avilez said.
Columbus police have not arrested anyone and have no new details about the case. If you have any information, give them a call.
