Berkshire Twp. Voters to Decide on Outlet Mall Proposal

DELAWARE COUNTY (Ken Hines) -- A small group of voters could have a big impact on central Ohio shoppers when Berkshire Township residents weigh in on a proposed outlet mall.

A referendum on next week's ballot gives approximately 1200 voters the opportunity to stop -- at least temporarily -- construction of a Tanger Outlet shopping center.

The township's zoning board approved Tanger's proposal, but many residents complained about the planned mall's potential impact on noise and light pollution levels, as well as increased traffic on the I-71 & US-36/SR-37 interchange.

Tanger's opponents fear that, even if Berkshire Township residents vote to block the mall's construction, developers will eventually have the land annexed to Columbus or Sunbury, allowing them to build on their preferred site.
