New Flu Vaccine Protects Against 4 Strains

COLUMBUS (Terri Sullivan) -- It's that time of the year again. Time to get a flu shot before the flu bug bites hard. But before you roll up your sleeves, there's something new you need to know about the vaccine.

Columbus Public Health Commissioner Dr. Teresa Long says this season's vaccine can protect you against four different strains of flu, as opposed to the more typical one that battles three strains.

"It's all about adding protection, which is really what we want to do," said Long. "None of us wants to get sick and every year 36,000 people across our country die from influenza. Many, many, many more are hospitalized."

Long says the new vaccine is a good thing, since the only thing you can predict about the flu is that it's unpredictable.

"It's really not too much of a good thing," said Long. "The important thing is the flu vaccine is the best we've got. We continue to improve it. This is improved, not 100 percent, but absolutely the best we have."
