Utica Man Charged with Murder of 2-Year-Old
LICKING COUNTY (Kelsey Mallahan/Ken Hines) -- A 24-year-old Utica man appeared in court Thursday, hours after he was arrested for the shaking death of a 2-year-old girl who was under his care.
According to Licking County Sheriffs Office officials, Daniel Hall admitted to shaking the child, who is the daughter of his live-in girlfriend, Melissa Swetnam, when she began to fuss during a bath Wednesday night.
Hall said, when the girl lost consciousness, he wrapped her in a towel and took her to the home of her maternal grandmother, who told a 911 dispatcher the toddler had hit her head in a fall.
The child was taken to Licking Memorial Hospital around 9 p.m. She was then air lifted to Nationwide Children's Hospital, where she died early Thursday morning.
The child's mother was at work when the incident occurred.
Hall -- an ex-military member with no prior criminal record -- has been charged with murder. His bail amount has been set at $500,000.
