Columbus Woman Using Exercise to Help Victims of Violence
COLUMBUS (Steve Levine/Ken Hines) -- A woman who turned to exercise for comfort in the wake of her son's killing is on a mission to help the families of other murder victims.
Malik West, 27, was gunned down during a robbery in November. Since the young fathers murder, his mother, Melanie West, has been walking on treadmills and park trails to work through her grief.
I was a stay-at-home mom, Melanie said. When my son passed away, I said, 'I need to do something, I cant languish in grief.'
So Melanie decided to fight back by forming The Malik West Foundation, a group that will help people who, like herself, have been affected by violence.
"We need to stop the violence, somebody has to be there for these kids," said Melanie, who is organizing a march that will be held in November at Wolfe Park in East Columbus.
When there are guys picking up guns and pulling the trigger, they are not thinking about family members and the kids that suffer, she said.
Money raised from the walk/run will be used to start a scholarship fund for kids who have lost loved ones to violence.
