Police Identify Possibly-Suicidal Woman Killed by Officer in NW Columbus
COLUMBUS (Ken Hines/Ben Garbarek) -- Investigators have released the identity of a woman fatally shot by police officers in a possible case of suicide by cop.
An officer shot Julie Caudill Friday morning on Ponset Dr. in Northwest Columbus after the woman answered her door with a gun in her hand, according to police spokesperson Rich Weiner.
"The door came open, she had the gun in her hand. That's when the officers started to retreat," Weiner said. "It was a very close encounter, up close and personal."
Five officers traveled to the home after Caudill's husband called police to report that his wife had slit her wrist, and slammed a door in his face when he tried to provide assistance.
Police believe Caudill suffered from mental illness before her death, and might have intended to force police to shoot her.
"On our way here, we were informed there might be a handgun inside, and that she had threatened suicide by cop," Weiner said.
The officer who shot Caudill has been placed on desk duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
