Apartment Fire Kills One Man and Leaves at Least One Family Homeless
EAST COLUMBUS (James Jackson) -- Tonight, Columbus fire investigators are looking for clues, after an apartment fire killed one man and left at least one family homeless. It happened on Red Bird Court, in the Hickory Village Apartments, in East Columbus, Saturday night.
The thought of what used to be home nearly brings Peggy Hansen to tears. The fire destroyed her place and other units in the building. She was sleeping at the time, when the apartment two doors down caught her attention. "I could just like see fire in between the fences and I was like what's he doing having a little camp fire out here on his porch? Then I looked even more and then I saw that fire was pouring out his windows," Hansen said.
Columbus firefighters fought to put the flames out and found out a man was still inside. They went in to rescue him, while Peggy retrieved as much as she could before heading to safety. "I was like grabbing my shoes and sweats and jacket and purse and by then, my place was filling with smoke. So then I like ran out the door," Hansen said.
Peggy made it, but her neighbor didn't. Firefighters finally got the man and took him to the hospital. "When they carried him out, he was smoking. Smoke was pouring off of him," Hansen said.
We're told the victim died from his injuries. Crews boarded up his unit. His charred furniture now sits outside. Meanwhile, Peggy, who was homeless just last year, is now staring at that reality again. "I climbed myself out of a big old hole and now, I don't know what's going to happen."
Firefighters have not released the name of the man, who died in the fire. Investigators are hoping to know the cause as early as tomorrow. Peggy tells ABC 6/FOX 28 she'll most likely stay with friends.
