Elderly Woman Beats Intruder with Cane

BUCHTEL, Ohio (Ken Hines) -- An elderly woman took matters into her own hands when an intruder entered her Athens County home, repeatedly striking the man with a cane, according to investigators.

Rozella Brown was watching television in her Bessemer Road home on Monday when she noticed a male suspect crawling across her kitchen floor.

Brown, 83, confronted the suspect and began vigorously beating him with her cane, according to Athens County Sheriff Patrick Kelly.

The suspect was able to grab Brown's wallet -- along with approximately $100 -- before exiting the home, but was beaten every step of the way by the cane-wielding woman.

Brown told investigators the suspect stated his name as "Austin" when she asked him to identify himself.

She described the suspect as a "school aged" male of average height and weight. He was wearing a gray corduroy hooded jacket and blue jeans at the time of the incident.

Brown was not able to describe the suspect's face to police despite her repeated attempts to strike him in the head with her cane.

Anyone with information about the suspect is encouraged to contact the Athens County Sheriff's Office.
