Woman Claims Ex Set House on Fire
SOUTHWEST COLUMBUS (James Jackson) Deborah Villagran said she wasnt surprised when her home caught on fire.
She said she lived there with her ex-boyfriend, whom she accused of setting the fire when she tried to move out.
I just came to remove my belongings and discontinue associations with this individual because of the domestic violence in this relationship," Villagran said.
She said her ex was threatening her and she refused to go inside to get her stuff.
I feared that it was a possibility he would have taken me in the house with him, Villagran said. He has tried to lock me up in the house on other occasions."
Firefighters showed up shortly after the fire was set, just before 10 a.m. Tuesday. The flames were contained in less than five minutes.
Columbus Fire Lt. Larry Wolfe said their routine quickly changed, however, when police told them it may have been set on purpose.
"We were relayed a description of the person that they were looking for and you just start looking around the neighborhood at anybody who might be watching you," Wolfe said.
No injuries were reported. Fire investigators have not yet released the cause of the fire.
