Emotions Erupt at Hearing Involving Child's Death
COLUMBUS (Lisa Rantala/Kate Liebers) -- A Columbus man faced a judge for felonious assault Friday, after police said he severely beat his girlfriend's four year old daughter only hours before she died.
Obvious anger erupted between both families at the courthouse.
The judge set a $1 million bond for the suspect, 28-year-old Michael McDaniel. That's when both families confronted each other and deputies stepped in.
Police said McDaniel was alone with 4-year-old Layla Malone on Wednesday while her mother was at work. McDaniel allegedly beat the pre-schooler, causing multiple skull fractures, bleeding behind her eyes and bruising all over her body.
Doctors told police Layla was brain dead before she died at the hospital Thursday night.
The girl's great uncle, Richard Miller, said he wants McDaniel charged for murder, not just felonious assault.
Any charges beyond the assault will depend on the results of the autopsy, which was scheduled to be performed Friday or Monday.
McDaniel's grandmother said her grandson was not raised to be a violent person.
Layla's family said McDaniel had just moved in with the girl's mom two-months ago. The family said the two knew each other from high school.
