Penniless College Student Attacked by Mugger
UNIVERSITY DISTRICT (Ben Garbarek) -- A wannabe mugger beat up a Columbus State student after she refused to give him any money.
This happened at an apartment complex off N. 4th Avenue near Chittenden Aveune Tuesday night.
The victim was walking up to her apartment when she said a guy came up to her demanding money. He turned violent when she said "no".
He repeatedly punched her in the back of the head.
"He kept hitting me," said Alyssa, who asked we not use her last name. "I started yelling 'help'."
She was coming home with groceries. She has cuts all over her hands because several beer bottles she was carrying broke during the attack.
Several neighbors heard Alyssa's screams.
"At first we just thought it was a couple getting into a screaming match," said neighbor Emily Morford. "As soon as we heard, 'he's beating the crap out of me', (that was a) red flag."
Morford and several other people ran out to help.
"I honestly think that's what stopped anything worse from happening," Alyssa said. "I thankfully had neighbors that came to my rescue."
Alyssa only has cuts and bruises thanks to the quick reaction from her neighbors.
The robber ran off and has not been caught.
If there's a silver lining, neighbors say they barely knew each other before and have now gotten to know one another. Now they're looking out for each other and making sure no one comes home alone.
