World War II Veteran Celebrates 100th Birthday

WESTERVILLE (Adam Slinger) An Ohio woman, who joined the U.S. Navy as a Supply Officer in World War II, celebrated her 100th birthday on Halloween.

Its just a number, said 99-year-old Cleo Backus.

Backus was born on October 31, 1913 in Croton, Ohio, now more often called Hartford.

I was born in the country with a country doctor in a horse and buggy.

She was the first in her family to go to college and went on to teach at Otterbein University, The Ohio State University and the Columbus School for Girls.

A proud American, Backus told ABC6/FOX28 she exudes red, white and blue.

Two weeks ago, she boarded an Honor Flight for a free trip to Washington, D.C. to share her memories about the Second World War.

As a member of the greatest generation, Backus hopes for a more peaceful world for her grandchildren and great-grandchild.

What amazes me the most is, we can have all this wonderful technology, but we cant get along with each other.
